William Myers (1801-1872) bought a claim to this square mile on the 18th of May 1846. He and his wife, Mary Ann Myers (1801-1870) lived here for the rest of their lives. From their birthplace in Garrard County Kentucky they moved here with their five children: Harriett, Meredith, Berilla, William Jr., and Josephine. The State of Texas granted William and Mary Myers the patent 'headright' title to the square mile on the 16th of December 1858. William Jr. died as a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. The other Myers' children married with neighbors and lived in the area. They sold their last family-owned parcels of the "William Myers Section" in 1887.

This only-known photograph of William Myers seems to have been taken about 1871, shortly after the death of his wife.

A son of William Myers -- The image at left was identified for me as Meredith Myers (1829-1905), oldest son of William and Mary Myers. In 2019, I was kindly contacted by another descendant of William and Mary Myers (Susan Scarpinato) with surprising news that her branch of the family has long identified their photograph as being Thomas A. Phillips (1819-1873), husband of Harriett, the oldest daughter of William and Mary Myers. Research evidence is currently unable to certify which identification is correct.

At left is a photograph of Lucy Ann Phillips (1852-1941), daughter of Harriett and Thomas Phillips (grand-daugther of William and Mary Myers). This picture was made when Lucy was living on the "William Myers Section".

William Myers' cabins

Legal records all agree that William and Mary Myers lived on the east side of the William Myers Section. A wonderful 1855 map was drawn by the colonists of La Reunion showing all the cabins in the district.
